In the year of our Lord, Nineteen Hundred and Forty-One on the Sixth day of the month of April, in the town of Houma, Louisiana, God ordained the birth of Alvin Verdin. He was the second of six children born to the union of the late Albert Sr. and Leola Verdin. Siblings Albert Jr., Millie, Lillie, Betty, and Gail.
Alvin Verdin was educated in the parochial school System in Terrebonne Parish and received a high school diploma in 1960 from St. Lucy's Catholic School in Houma, Louisiana. Soon after Mr.Verdin enlisted in the U.S. Navy at which time he was stationed in Japan and fought in Vietnam. Upon his release from the military, he attended Southern University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1968, and his Masters in Physical Education from McNeese State University in 1974. Mr.Verdin met his life's love Katherine Verdin and were happily married from July 31, 1981 until present. Mr. Verdin went on to be an educator for 23 1/2 years for the Calcasieu Parish School System. He was also an employee with the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's office for 33 1/2 years. Mr. Verdin was known as "Coach" by most. and was an active member of his community.
He was Charter President and member of the Big Cypress Bass Hustler, member of Magnolia Life Peace Association, DARE, Boys and Girls Club, Louisiana Sherriff's Association. President of CPSO Optimist Club and American Legion Post 551 and VFW of Moss Bluff, Louisiana.
Alvin Verdin, 73, died Saturday, February 21, 2015, in his hoe surrounded by his family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Albert Verdin, Sr. and Leola Dickerson Verdin; one brother, Albert Verdin, Jr., and one sister Lillie Verdin Cressey.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Katherine Marie Miller Verdin; his son, Anthony C. Verdin of Houston, TX; two granddaughters, Antoinette Avon Verdin and Antonique Marie Verdin of Tucson, Arizona; three sisters, Millie Verdin, Betty Verdin and Gale Verdin all of Houma, LA; and a host of nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
