Obituary

Sister Camilla Savoie Carter was born in Sunset, Louisiana, on May 14, 1932, to John Easton Savoie and Elizabeth Domingeaux Savoie. On November 5, 1949, she united in Holy Matrimony to JC Carter. To this union, five children were born. She moved to Lake Charles and united with the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend DJ Jones. She continued to serve God after his death under the leadership of the late Reverend Horace Allison. She maintained her membership with Mt.Calvary and was a member of the Senior Choir and Women's Mission Department under the leadership of Reverend Elmore Garner whom she thought of as a son. Later in life, she would unite in Holy Matrimony to the late Horace Joseph.

Sister Carter was a licensed Cosmetologist and was one of the first to bring the technique of hair weaving to Lake Charles in the mid '70s. She owned her own Beauty Salon in North Lake Charles and served many by working long hours in her shop. She stopped to care for her son Joseph Carter from 1986-1988. After his death, she returned to work as a Foster Grandparent at the Foreman Reynaud YMCA, where she taught arts and crafts during the summer camps and helped children with their homework in the after-school program. Later she would work in the Head Start and Pre-School classrooms at JD Clifton Elementary. She loved working with the 3 and 4 year olds and looked forward to each new class at the start of each new school year. She was honored by Mayor Nic Hunter for her years of service upon her retirement. She lived a life of service and taught her children to do the same.

Preceding her in death, her parents, John Easton Savoie and Elizabeth Domingeaux Savoie. Her siblings, Cora Savoie Carter, Rufus Savoie, Marjorie Savoie Brown, and Easton Savoie. Her son, Joseph Charles Carter.
