IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dorothy
Miller
July 4, 1935 – January 2, 2023
Dorothy Miller , 87, departed this earthly life on Monday, January 2, 2023, after losing her battle with Cancer.
The life of Dorothy began in Iowa, Louisiana on July 4, 1935, third child, and first daughter to the late John Miller and Odelia Carrier Miller. Dorothy met and married the late Rickie Allen Gundrum who served in the Air Force. They had one son, Michael Wayne Gundrum born in Lake Charles, Louisiana in June of 1956.
Dorothy was employed as a Licensed Practical Nurse for over 30 years in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Chicago, Illinois. Upon arriving back in the Lake Charles area, she became employed through the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Louisiana Foster Grandparent Program from March 2007 until October 2021, at the Foreman- Reynaud Community Center. She enjoyed doing all types of arts and crafts and sending homemade crafts to her friends and loved ones.
Dorothy was the person who never met a stranger and was ready to tell you about her past trials and tribulations, and just how far God had brought her. She said that she could identify with all types of people and could tell them that if He renewed her, He could definitely do the same for anyone else. Her renewed faith in God allowed her a new and loving relationship with her son Michael, where they could sit and speak of the goodness of the Lord in both their lives.
She accepted all 66 Books of the Bible as the supreme authority in her life and the transforming power of that connection. She believed in following the Fourth Commandment (Exodus 20:8-11) which included observance of a 24-hour sunset to sunset Sabbath, beginning on Friday evening, and all day Saturday until sunset. She affectionately called it "her Sabbath Day" and all close to her knew how much she loved and cherished it. She knew and believed that there was no need to worry about her once she had passed away because she would be resting peacefully in her grave with no pain and suffering until Jesus comes back.
In addition, she believed in missionary outreach, helping others, and leading by example which led her to "Water Baptism" on February 17, 2007, when she was baptized at Sharon Chapel under the leadership of Pastor Willie S. Lee, Jr. She shared a special bond with his wife, Sis. Wilma-Kirk Lee, who herself, like Dorothy, liked crocheting.
During the COVID-19 pandemic along with Hurricanes Laura & Delta, she was still able to receive God's Word and share in the worship experience on ZOOM facilitated by Pastor Gerard Vertilus from Houston, Texas, either on her cell phone or the computer. Yes, she knew how to operate them both. Dorothy and Sis. Gessie Vertilus shared a special bond as well - the contagious "smile" that made everyone feel loved.
Dorothy was an active member in church as Head Deaconess and ensured that there was always "unleavened bread" for communion and plenty of love, hugs, and compassion for everyone as she was affectionally called "Grandmother".
She was preceded in death by her brothers Arthur and Lawrence Carrier, her sisters Gloria Grayson and Kerline Agins.
This God-fearing Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Sister, and Aunt leaves to cherish her memories, one son, Michael Wayne (Jacqueline Mays) Gundrum of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; three brothers, Glenn and David Miller of Lake Charles, and Michael (Debra) Celestine of Houston, Texas; grandson, David Jevon King of Arizona; granddaughter Angela Taylor of Tennessee; a very special niece, Katherine Verdin of LeBleu Settlement; four special friends she called her "Fabulous Four", Ethel Thibodeaux, Deborah Doshier & Faye Ford all of Lake Charles; and her adoptive daughter Michelle Jones-Vital of Iowa, Louisiana, and a host of other relatives and friends.
