Obituary

Earl Dave "Bull" Diaz was born April 10, 1931, to the late Theodore (Eliza Lewis) Daiz of Covington, Louisiana. He was the fourth of seven children. He attended the public schools of St. Tammany Parish and graduated from Julius Rosenwald High School in 1950.

Diaz was the recipient of an athletic scholarship to Grambling College; however, his tenure as an athlete was interrupted in order to serve his country during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged July 24, 19453. After which, he returned to Grambling to complete his undergraduate studies. While in attendance, he was coached by the legendary Eddie Robinson as a member of the 1955 National Negro Football Championship and was chosen as a pre-season All-American 1954 by Pigskin Review.

He received the B.S. Degree in 1956 with a major in Industrial Arts and a minor in Mathematics. Upon graduation, he was employed by the Calcasieu Parish School System as a teacher of Industrial Arts and Mathematics. His first assignment was at Grand Avenue High School, DeQuincy, where he remained for sixteen years. He spent the remainder of his teaching career at Mossville Junior High School. He received credentials from Wake FOrest University YMCA Physical Fitness Workshop and Black Directors Leadership Workshop YMCA Southeastern Region, Atlanta, Georgia.

During the summer of 1968, he was employed by the Gulf Assistance Program of Southwest Louisiana as Director of the Summer Recreation Program. In said capacity, he coordinated the program with a staff of nine and one secretary.

After serving on the Board of Directors of the Foreman-Reynaud YMCA for several years, he was appointed Executive Director. In May 1973, under his leadership, the Foreman-Reynaud Branch became an independent agency in an official chartering ceremony. Because of his foresight and dedication, a major expansion plan for progress became a reality. The membership grew 250% and the variety of programs offered covered a host of activities for the older and younger citizens and also the very active and semi-active.

Diaz was a member of St. Paul AME Church and affiliated with various professional, community-oriented, and sports organizations. Among those were Retired Teachers, LEA, CEA, Charter member of North Lake Charles Kiwanis Club, Charter member of Grambling State University Alumni (Ray D. Molo Chapter), Lake Charles Officials Association, Calcasieu Association for Retarded Citizens, Conoco Community Advisory Panel, and the Lake Charles Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. He was the writer and organizer of the Kappa Kowboy Karnival, which successfully ran for six years.

He was the recipient of many honors and awards. Among those were: the coveted Southwestern Province Individual Achievement of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., "30 Years of Soul" 1973-2003 Honoring Earl Diaz, Yesterday-Today, Law Day Liberty Bell Award (Southwestern Bar Association), Man of the Year: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., YMCA Board of Directors, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, INc. Service Award, Kappa Alpha Psi Silhouettes, City of Lake Charles Certificate of Recognition, and the appointment of former Louisiana Governor David C.Treen to the Lake Charles City Council.

Diaz is survived by three children: Shereba (Melvin) of Monroe, Deidrick Earl (Tamiko) of Kennedale, Texas, Sher (Shelby) of Fort Worth, Texas, and their mother Carrie Winston Diaz, Lake Charles; two sisters Helen B. Diaz, Ruth (Lavergne) Rose of Chicago, two brothers, Eugene and Hubert Diaz of Chicago; five grandchildren, Andrica McDade, Andrene McDade of Monroe, Duran Earl and Destini Diaz of Houston, Texas, Julia Ann Dilworth, and brother in law, Louis C. Dilworth, Jr., Baton Rouge, and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Stefani, parents, two brothers, Theodore, Jr. and Herbert Diaz, two nieces Margaret Ann and Shirley Diaz, and his mother in law Julia Porche Winston Dilworth.
