IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Erma Lee
Lewis
May 26, 1928 – September 30, 2021
Erma Lee Lewis , 93, was born in DeQuincy, LA to her father, Ross Penigar and mother, Elizabeth Thomas. She was one of three children. Her siblings, Guy Penigar and Marie Harris both preceded her in death.
For more than 30 years, she was the loving and proud wife of John D. Lewis who also preceded her in death. She was a magnificent mother to her only son, Mack McCain, Jr. As part of her union with John D, she also lovingly embraced four bonus children, John L. Lewis, John D. Lewis, Jr., Martha Lewis Smith, and Dianne Lewis Miller (Ronnie).
Erma accepted Jesus Christ in her life at an early age and was a dedicated Christian woman. As referenced in Proverbs 31:10, she was "an excellent woman [one who is spiritual, capable, intelligent, and virtuous]. Her value is more precious than jewels and her worth is far above rubies or pearls."
She was a praying mother, grandmother, auntie, and friend. She was a proud member of Messiah Missionary Baptist Church under the teaching of Pastor Robert L. Owens. As an active member, she participated in the mission, choir, and faithfully attended services regularly.
Erma was a trailblazer and was committed to education for herself and her family. She set a high standard for those that she loved, and she loved without limit. As a young married woman, in the 1950's, she returned to complete her education post integration and went on to earn a Bachelor's Degree from Grambling State University. Upon completing her degree, she began a career as an educator that spanned more than 40 years. She retired from both public and parochial school in Calcasieu Parish. Some of the schools where she taught include: 2nd Ward, Jackson Street, Fisherville Elementary, T.H. Watkins, J.D. Clifton, Immaculate Heart of Mary, Pearl Watson, and J.J. Johnson. At the rich age of 80 years old, Mrs. Lewis finally left the school house to retire to her home peacefully.
She leaves to mourn a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grand- children, nieces, nephews, cousins, former students, colleagues, and dear friends.
