Obituary

The Reverend George Spencer Sibley departed this life on Saturday, June 10, 2023, at 1:50 p.m.  He was 90 years old.  He was born August 20, 1932, in Homer, LA, Claiborne Parish.  He was reared in Many, LA, Sabine Parish.  He was a retired school teacher and minister.  He was the son of Robert W. Sibley and Rosa Aline Legardy Sibley.

He received his Bachelor's of Science Degree in Education from Grambling College in 1952, now Grambling State University.  He served for the Korean War from 1952 to 1956.  He was an aircraft instructor of the B-47 Aircraft Bomber.  After his military service, he attended the University of Colorado to work on a Master's Degree in Counseling.  He taught school for approximately 25 years.  He was a school teacher in Calcasieu, St. Tammany and Jeff Davis Parishes.

He received his Minister's License in 1969.  In 1970, George Sibley was ordained by the Seventh District Baptist Association to become a minister.  He served as a pastor of New Emmanuel Baptist Church from 1970 to 1987.  He was a member of the Ministerial Alliance for 30 years and a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity since 1951.  He received his Master of Divinity Degree in Biblical Studies in 1982 from the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in New Orleans, LA.

George Sibley was a member of Zion Tabernacle Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Alvin Brass.  He used his Christian Leadership to develop and implement a training program for the deacons at Zion Tabernacle Baptist Church.  He gave training and instruction on the roles of pastors and deacons.  He focused on leadership and christian shepherding of the church.

He leaves to cherish his memories his only daughter with Mary Louise Cutliff Sibley, Deidre Sibley Rachal and her husband, Sylvester Rachal; five grandchildren, Eric Spencer Rachal (Sommer), D'Jenia F. Rachal, Armand E. Rachal, Kennari I. Rachal and Ryan E.S. Rachal; stepdaughter, Caroline Watkins; step grandchildren, Josh Watkins and Mary Watkins all of Houston, TX;  Jessica Guillory Jackson (D'Andre) of Houston, TX and daughter-in-law, Rena Malveaux of Houston, TX and a host of cousins and family across the globe.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Genevieve Ledet Sibley and stepson, Michael J. Guillory.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 22, 2023, at 9:00 a.m., and funeral Service at 11:00 a.m., at Zion Tabernacle Baptist Church, The Rev. Alvin Brass, officiating.  Burial will follow in Southwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Jennings, LA under the direction of King's Funeral Home.
