Obituary

Henry Vernon "Coach" Griffin , passed away on June 12, 2018, surrounded by his family. Coach leaves behind a remarkable legacy because of the many lives he led through his years of coaching, teaching, community involvement, church life, friendship, and mentoring young boys and men. His passion for education and good citizenship is evident by the many young lives he touched. Coach's intellect and genuine caring nature drew people of all ages to him.

Coach is survived by his wife of 35 years, Elizabeth Conway Griffin, one daughter/granddaughter, Jasmine Elizabeth Griffin, and stepdaughter Darnisha "Peaches' Green; best friend, Willie Smith, Sr.; one brother, Curtis (Cinder) Griffin and one sister, Frances Griffin, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Coach attended Southern University and A&M College, where he graduated with a B.S in Education and McNeese State University with a Master's in Health and P.E. He received certification in Physics from the University of Louisiana. He began his teaching and coaching career which spanned 33 years at South Cameron High School. He was named Coach of the Year, Class AA in 1986.

His love for the community, teaching, and mentorship extended beyond the classroom. He served as Treasurer for the Lake Charles Branch of the NAACP. He was an active member of PHI Beta Sigma Fraternity until his health failed and was active in the Southern University A&M College Alumni Local Chapter. Coach was a faithful member of Zion Tabernacle Baptist for many years and was a faithful Sunday School attendee, he sang in the Men's choir until his health failed. He was very active in Zion Tabernacle's Bayou Classic Christian Fellowship of Southwest La., and faithfully served as acknowledgement and awards chairman.

He is preceded in death by son, Audwin Griffin and parents, Louise Golden Griffin and Genters Griffin.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2018, at 11:00 a.m., at Zion Tabernacle Baptist Church, Rev. Alvin Brass, officiating. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Mausoleum under the direction of King's Funeral Home.
