On Saturday, October 21, 2023, John Chavis departed this life at the age of 73 at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital surrounded by family and loved ones.  He was born September 2, 1950, to John Merlin Chavis, Sr., and Ethel Marie Valarie.  John grew up in Prien Lake and graduated from Washington High School in 1968.  He worked for the U. S. Postal Service for thirty years and served for the U. S. Army in Korea.  His hobbies included fishing, hunting, motorcycling, trail riding and being the chief of our family and a supportive grandfather.  He was a passionate husband, father, grandfather, family man and friend.

He leaves to cherish his memories his wife of 50 years, Lucy Leora Chavis of Lake Charles, LA; children, Angela Chavis-Landry (Leslie) of Iowa, LA and Johnathon Chavis (Fernanya') of Lake Charles, LA; his siblings, Leon Chavis (Mathilda) of Lake Charles, LA, Debra Hicks of Houston, TX, Shelton Chavis (Shirley) of Houston, TX, Diane Kelly (Lewis) of Houston, TX, Randy Valarie of Lake Charles, LA and Ronald Valarie of Lake Charles, LA; grandchildren, Tyler Chavis (Kelcy), Lacey Landry and Kambrian Winston; great grandchildren, Weslynn Kade, Wyatt Kole and Lennox Wayne.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Merlin Chavis, Sr., and Ethel Marie Valarie; his siblings, Shirley McDaniel, Dwayne Johnson and Gary Chavis and one brother-in-law, Reginald Hicks.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at 8:00 a.m., at King's Funeral Home and funeral service at 10:00 a.m., at Christian World.  Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery under the direction of King's Funeral Home.
