Obituary

In Loving Memory of a beloved Man of God, husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.

Lawrence Cornelius Jones was born on September 26, 1937, to the late Teley and Violet Craig Jones in Alexandria, LA.  He attended elementary school in Alexandria, completing middle and high school in New Orleans, LA.  He graduated from Xavier Prep High School then enrolled and graduated from Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA, where he met the love of his life, Mary Jane Martin.  Lawrence and Mary Jane married in 1960, and to this love a son, Keith R. Jones, was born.

Lawrence and Mary Jane moved to Vinton where he taught Industrial Education and was Assistant Track and Basketball Coach for 10 years.  He also taught Adult Education, served as Boy Scout Master and Director of the Summer Recreation Center.

Lawrence moved his family to Lake Charles in 1969, being employed by Firestone Rubber as a supervisor for 10 years.  Leaving Firestone, he was employed as a Lab Analyst at Citgo Lube Plant retiring in 2000 after 20 years of service.

Lawrence served at St. Henry Catholic Church as Eucharistic Minister, Trustee for 31 years, Catechist, Vacation Bible School worker, Knights of Columbus 3rd and 4th degree as well as counselor Youth Squires, Knights of Peter Claver as well as counselor of Junior Knights.  Lawrence received the Diocesan Distinguished Award in 2003.  He was a member of the Advisory Board of the St. Charles Retreat Center and Rosary Makers Club.  He was a faithful mentor for classroom students for five years.  As a life member of Kappa Alpha Psi, he served as Advisor of McNeese Epsilon Phi Chapter. He was a faithful member of A.C.T.S. Community, RSVP Board Member and Greek Advisory Board at McNeese State University.  He received Family of the Year Award for Knights of Columbus and Knights of Peter Claver.

Lawrence is best known for his deep faith, loyalty and undying family love.  He never met a stranger, always had words of wisdom and a great sense of humor.  He is known as Lawrence, dad, grandpop, Uncle Lawrence, Pi, Uncle Pi, Unk and Larry.

On June 20, 2016, at 4:36 p.m., Lawrence went home to the Lord enfolded in hugs from his wife, Jane, of 55 years and 10 months and son, Keith, Sr.  Others left to cherish his memories are his grandchildren, Keith, II, Karmen Jones, daughter-in-law, Miranda Jones; sister, Betty Jones of Alexandria, Elsie (Otis) Bailey of New Orleans, LA; one brother, Isaiah (Pat) Jones of Little Rock, AR, sister-in-law, Dorothy (Peter) Goodman of Arlington, TX, and a host of nieces, nephews godchildren, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Teley and Violet Jones; brothers, Arnold and Teley Jones, Jr.; sister and brother-in-law, Frank and Rose Wright.

A wake service will be held on Thursday, June 23, 2016, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at King's Funeral Home with a Cursillo Rosary at 6:30 p.m. A second visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday, June 24, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., and funeral service at 3:00 p.m., at St. Henry Catholic Church, Msgr. Daniel Torres, officiating.  Burial will be in Sacred Heart Mausoleum under the direction of King's Funeral Home.
