Obituary

Mary Truitt Thomas, affectionately known as “Totsie,” was a native of Ville Platte, Louisiana. She was born on July 10, 1954, to John W. Truitt II and Ethel Vidrine. She departed this life on August 20, 2026, at Harbor Hospice in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

At the age of ten, Mary was baptized at St. John Baptist Church in Ville Platte, Louisiana, by Reverend Samuel W. Pullen Sr., Pastor. She continued her Christian journey at Throne of Grace in Lake Charles, Louisiana, under the leadership of Dr. Wilton Red.

Mary was a graduate of Ville Platte High School, Class of 1972. Upon graduation, she attended Grambling State University and, in 1973, decided to serve her country by joining the United States Army. Mary later continued her education at Louisiana State University at Eunice.

Her work experience included retail and hotel management, as well as serving as a substitute teacher.

Mary was preceded in death by her father, John Truitt II; her mother, Ethel Richardson; her brothers, Donald McKinnie and John W. Truitt III; and her sister, Lula Mae Truitt.

Mary leaves to cherish her husband, Vincent Thomas of Lake Charles, LA; two sons, Ronald Swain (Carolyn) of Lake Charles, Louisiana, and Matthew Swain (Loretta) of Lake Charles, Louisiana; her children of love, Yolanda Owens (Larry) of Houston, Texas; Erica Thomas of Houston, Texas; Aisha Doucette (Dovinsiki) of Ville Platte, Louisiana; Carey Webster of Ville Platte, Louisiana; Keisha Thomas of Lake Charles, Louisiana; and Darius Walker of Alexandria, Louisiana.

She also leaves to cherish her memory her siblings: Lemond Jack (Rita) of DeRidder, Louisiana; Deborah Dunn (Freddie) of Stone Mountain, Georgia; Wilson Truitt (Laura) of Lawtell, Louisiana; Robert Truitt (Carla) of Lawtell, Louisiana; Juanita T. Rogers (Jimmy) of Orange, Texas; Sarah Jackson of Eunice, Louisiana; Angela May Lindsay of Eunice, Louisiana; Mark Truitt (Esther) of Pensacola, Florida; Pamela Thomas of Orange, Texas; Beverly Thomas (James) of Dallas, Texas; Mary Brown of Lake Charles, Louisiana; and Benjamin Truitt (Mary) of Eunice, Louisiana.

Mary also leaves behind fourteen grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church, beginning at 9:00 AM. Funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM. Burial will be held on Monday, August 31, 2026, at the Southwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery, at 9:00 AM. Services entrusted to King's Funeral Home.
