Brother Sherman Dean Jackson was born on September 4, 1963, in Lake Charles, Louisiana, to Mr. Neal Sr. and Mrs. Gertrude (Stevens) Jackson. He was the youngest of twelve children, eight girls and four boys, and was affectionately known as “the baby of the family.” Sherman was a lifelong resident of Iowa, Louisiana.
Sherman accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age and was baptized at Zion Travelers Baptist Church in Iowa, Louisiana. He graduated from Iowa High School in 1981 and entered the United States Army. After returning home, Sherman worked for many years as a skilled brick mason. Later in life, Sherman attended and graduated from ABC Truck Driving School where he became a cross-country truck driver for Swift Transportation.
Sherman was a man full of love, with a true heart of service to others. He was always willing to help anyone in need and consistently placed the needs of others before his own. His life was a beautiful example of unselfish love and generosity.
On February 18, 2026, at the age of 62, Sherman answered the Master’s call and transitioned from his earthly home to his heavenly home.
Sherman was preceded in death by his parents, Neal Sr. and Gertrude Jackson; three sisters, Shirley Marie Jackson, Sheila Jackson-Schexnayder, and Mary Jackson-DeRuso; two brothers, Cleveland Jackson and Neal Jackson, Jr.; his goddaughter, Tomica Monique Nash; one niece, Inga Goodwin-Beaudoin; three nephews, David “D.J.” Brown, Tommie “Spoonie” Schexnayder II, and Jeromy Goodwin; three brothers-in-law: Willie DeRuso, Howard Johnson, Sr. and Robert Lewis.
Sherman leaves to cherish his memory, six sisters: Patricia Johnson, of Lake Charles, LA; Priscilla (Glenn) Bevel of Port Arthur, TX; Catherine Lewis of Iowa, LA; Verina Jackson of Broussard, LA; Jocelyn (Zachary) Shields of Beaumont, TX; and Kendra (William) Mazyck of Lake Charles, LA. He also leaves two brothers: Rickey (June) Jackson and Marvin Jackson, both of Lake Charles, LA.
Sherman also leaves to cherish his memory, his aunt, Brenda Jackson-LeBlanc of Lake Charles, LA; and his uncle, Isville Jackson, Jr. of Houston, TX. Sherman’s nieces and nephews were very dear to him and they loved him unconditionally. He had a unique and special bond with each of them. He leaves a total of 34 nieces and nephews; 119 great-nieces and nephews; 89 great-great nieces and nephews; and 3 great-great-great nieces and nephews. He also leaves a special niece, Khloe Broussard and her mother Rosa Stabler, both of Sulphur, LA, and a special cousin, Wilma Faye Charles of Iowa, LA.
Sherman will be forever missed by a host of many cousins, friends, and the community of Iowa. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, February 28, beginning at 9am for Visitation and 11:00am for Funeral at Zion Travelers Baptist Church in Iowa. Burial will be in Lacassine Catholic Cemetery under the direction of King's Funeral Home.
